A fine silver chain strung with a pale white agate peace circle, held in place by three butterflies in gradient green enamel — two flanking the pendant, one smaller butterfly on the opposite side — with two small freshwater pearls set symmetrically along the chain. Symbol Story & Cultural

Agate is chalcedony — microcrystalline quartz — a material that has been worked across every civilization that had access to it for the simple reason that it takes a high polish, is hard enough to last, and has a quiet beauty that does not diminish with time. The peace circle — píng’ān kuò, literally “peace circle” — is one of the oldest forms in the Chinese lapidary tradition. The shape is a flat disc with a centered circular hole: complete on the outside, open on the inside. The best jade and agate peace circles were valued for their evenness of color and the consistency of their translucency — a circle that allows light through is more alive than one that does not.
